Factory Automation White Papers

Two technical reports have recently been released by IFS/GE for use by consulting engineers, and factory automation planners and systems integrators involved with the Factory Automation and Process Control market. These reports are now available in .pdf format; you must have Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or later available in order to download these documents.

The Utilization of Hardened Managed Ethernet Switches in Today’s Ethernet-Based Industrial Control & Factory Automation, Industrial Security, & Transportation Communications Networks.
By Bruce M. Berman, Transportation/Infrastructure Sales Manager; International Fiber Systems, a business unit of GE Infrastructure..

An 11 page technical report that reviews and details the the use of Ethernet based tranmission in modern SCADA, Factory Automation and Process Control Networks. Network engineers are continuously searching for better ways to eliminate the possibility of a single point-of-failure from causing a communications network from partially or completely failing. As networks become increasingly more complex, the technical problems associated with a single point-of-failure and the innovative and cost-effective ways of eliminating them have become a major issue within the communications engineering community. This is particularly true in terms of improvement of system reliability, availability, maintainability, and the minimization of downtime. The trend within the industrial control and factory automation, industrial security, and transportation markets is towards the use of open architecture/standards-based hardware and networks as well as seamless systems integration. As a result, Ethernet is being embraced on a wholesale basis. This report details the typical systems design and benefits gained.
