Overcoming Distance with a Single Source of Truth

KPOC runs three offshore fields, Kebabangan, Kamunsu East, and Kamunsu East Upthrown Canyon, over 100 kilometres from its Kota Kinabalu operations office, with corporate headquarters another 1,600 kilometres away in Kuala Lumpur. Three locations, one operation, and until recently, no way to see it all at once. 

 

Instead of live data, KPOC ran on spreadsheets and email. "It was a pretty inefficient way of doing things," said Victor Siaw, Integrated Operations Project Engineer. Reports lived on individual laptops, versions drifted apart, and by the time information reached decision-makers it was often already outdated. The cost showed up where it mattered most: inaccurate reporting, slower decisions, and production left on the table.

Keeping a Constant Eye on Offshore Operations 

 

Inside the 1 Sulaman building on Sabah's east coast, KPOC's managers and engineers run deepwater operations from more than 100 kilometres away, without setting foot on the platform. "Today, we can monitor the offshore conditions in real time without having to be there," says Victor Siaw. That capability didn't come from adding headcount. It came from integrating operations.

 

When Critical Decisions Depend on Disconnected Data
 

KPOC's Kebabangan Cluster, comprising the Kebabangan, Kamunsu East, and Kamunsu East Upthrown Canyon fields, sits in the South China Sea, over 100 kilometres from the Kota Kinabalu operations office. Corporate headquarters, in the L52 Petronas Twin Towers, is another 1,600 kilometres beyond that. Three sites, one operation, and a widening information gap.

 

Before IFS, that gap was filled with spreadsheets and email. "It was a pretty inefficient way of doing things," Victor said. Reports sat on individual laptops, so figures didn't reconcile, decisions ran on stale data, and files occasionally went missing entirely. The result was predictable: inaccurate reporting, delayed decisions, and production performance that fell short of potential. Leadership knew the fix had to start with the data itself.


Bringing Operations Together in Real Time
 

KPOC turned to IFS.ai Operational Intelligence to unify data from across the business into live, shared dashboards, replacing fragmented reports with a single source of truth. "They ensure that all of our employees are looking at the same, most current data," Victor said.

 

The impact is operational, not just informational. Teams use the dashboards to make real-time calls on asset integrity, facilities, HSE, and logistics. Well performance is tracked continuously, and when output drifts, the system triggers an alert so teams can act before the anomaly turns into lost production. "That has helped us substantially in terms of saving time and getting the most from our wells," Victor said.

 

More than 100 kilometres of land and sea still separate KPOC's teams from their offshore assets. The information gap that once separated them has closed.
